While Cult Girl is a work of fiction, the descriptions about life in a cult like The Brethren on which the story is built, are all too real. The author presents so many situations that parallel my own real-life experiences, having lived in a a similar, misogynistic cult for over 20 years. Independent thinking and questioning the cult's authority were, and continue to be, punishable because they threaten the cult's very existence. The author gets the point across in a direct and touching way. I applaud her ability to tell her story. I'm so proud of Lili!
This story moved me, often in unepected ways. The author knows from real life experience, the pain of cult-induced trauma. As well as her life experience and learning of the topic, the author offers us a window into a disconnected, isolated experience, and a path to healing and recovery. This novel resonates beyond the understanding of "cult" as we understand that to be.
Cult Girl is a captivating story of a girl approaching womanhood whose life changes when her family adopts a new religion with ever changing rules -rules that are designed to control. The author masterfully paints a provocative tale that combines surprise, madness, sadness, love, and hope that builds to a great conclustion of a life reclaimed.
Just finished the book in one sitting. I loved it, very entertaining and yet straight to the point about the horrible details of the cult. I rooted for Lili to get out of there from the early beginning of her quest. So recommend this little gem of a "truth" book.
